Earth Science: Heeding its Wonders

The lesson for this quarter is all about Earth Science. I like the idea of learning about the planet we live in. I've learned about the layers of the earth, tectonic plates, how mountain ranges were formed, and I also learned about volcanoes and different water forms. Of course those aren't the only topics I've learned but I can't just go on and on and on with lists of topics that are under Earth Science. The topics are all interesting and aren't that hard to understand especially with Sir Romie providing us with powerpoint presentations and videos to even further expand our knowledge about our topic.
PALOMARA

I learned a lot from earth science. It was also fun because we get to learn a lot from something that we live in. It’s simply amazing to realize that we are nothing compared to the size of the earth that we lived in. It’s also amazing to know how the earth is so diverse. One of the most amazing things i have learned in the layers of the earth. Knowing how deep, thick, and large each layer of the earth is fascinating. Realizing that the core in the absolute middle of the earth is what pulls us all down which is a large solid and very very hot iron. Earth, the home that we live in is a very interesting place.
GERONIMO

This quarter I have learned so much about the earth especially about the volcanoes. I've learned all about the types of the volcanoes and all of the function of each type of volcanoes. I have also learned about the earthquakes and all of the instruments for earthquakes. It that topic really changed my mind about earthquakes, it is really frightening that any time an earthquake may hit, so that is why we should all be prepared. I also learned what to do and bring when there's an earthquake, it is safe to stay indoors if you are indoors because it increases the chance of you being alive. There are a lot of events that happened this quarter, it was fun even though the pressure is unbearable, to be honest, I really enjoyed this quarter but sadly every good thing must come to an end. But I am looking forward for a school year like this again in senior high school or in college, It was a privilege being one of Mr. Dolor's student because that man is so kind and generous, I will never forget him even if he's switching schools, I'm just so grateful that he became my teacher and it would be a delight if he became my teacher again.
SALCEDO

Our topic this 4th quarter in Science is earth science. It is the study of earth and space. Earth Science affects our everyday lives. The lesson this quarter is very interesting and by far the best one for me. We mainly studied about geology. I learned about the physical geography of earth. I learned more about earthquakes and it's faults. Another thing that I have learned more about is kinds of water uses and mountain ranges. The topic this quarter wasn't very hard nor easy. This quarter made me understand more about earth science. I learned more because of the lessons our teacher thought us about.
OASAN

Earth Science is a topic that I really wanted to learn. It isn't just a topic for me, that’s why. It made learn about how the Earth works, how my home is. I know this sounds incredibly stupid but the Earth is special to me and that is why I like this topic. I learned the kinds of water uses, volcanic eruptions or activities, how the countries were formed, and many more. I learned a lot about this topic and it's all thanks to Sir Dolor.
MARIANO

Earth Science is related to the planet Earth. It can be about geology, the lithosphere or like the layers of the Earth. I'm really interested about this topic because it is easy to understand unlike the other lessons before. It's just all about planet Earth. Like how earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruption, etc. happen. It's just simple but there's a lot to memorize or remember. This is the last topic for the school year so I'm really glad that Sir Romie was able to teach us about this lesson.

Our Ride to Success

Thesis Days
I have to say, Grade 10 has been the most stressful and mentally tiring year ever. Our thesis plays a big role on this matter. Because of our thesis we have all had mental and emotional breakdowns. There were times when we all pissed each other off for not cooperating and there were times when we were just total zombies together. Although our original study got rejected and our group was up for re-defense I personally believe that it was a blessing in disguise. A blessing that worn us all out but thought us very valuable lessons in life that I'll surely be bringing with me in the future. But despite all of these hardships, we still made it. We got accepted and we finished all our paper works on time. I'm infinitely grateful for all of the people who have helped us get to where we are now; our research advisers, Ms. Franny and Sir Romie, Sir Michael Lomibao and the other panelists, our group, and of course the Almighty God who gave us His wisdom and strength to never give up on our thesis. Without all of you we wouldn't have been able to do any of this.

PALOMARA

A lot of sleepless nights, a lot of stressful moments, a lot of good memories. That's how I can describe our thesis. But other than that, it was a beautiful moment in my life. It made me realize the hardships of the future and helped prepare me. I also believe that the thesis made all of us, the members, closer to each other. (I mean, why wouldn't we become close we spend every dissmissal doing the thesis.) The thesis, it was a pain in my butt, to be completely honest. All those researching, experimenting, etc. But I realized that it was actually fun and exciting and that it was much better because I knew all of us put our heart and our souls into it. The thesis, it's a memory to me now. I also felt really excited that we got approved!!!
MARIANO

The thesis was also one of the highlights of this quarter. Our previous study got rejected, but we made a huge comeback and it is successful. I'm so happy that our study got approved and that it is over. The day of the re defense, I was quite nervous because me and my fellow researchers have to present the study in front of the school officials and the school administrators. But after our thesis got approved my group mates shed tears of joy and it felt great. It felt great seeing my group-mates happy because all of our hard work and efforts are all worth it. All of the group meetings and all of the sleepless nights are now over, and of course once again, I give thanks to our research advisers Mr. Dolor and Mrs. Sandoval for helping us through the whole thesis and for the non stop motivation and also for not giving up on us. They're one of the reasons why our study got approved. I would also like to thank our school assistant director Mr. Lomibao completely supporting us and for giving us ideas for our study, kuya Alvin as well was a huge factor for our success and of course most of all, the man up above, our Almighty God for not giving up on my group also. I am just full of joy because it is all over now and summer is approaching.
SALCEDO

Doing an investigatory project was really hard. Especially when we get rejected on the first final defense and do an entire new study. We had to start another chapter 1 to chapter 5 and another whole process of creating a product. Except this one is compressed within 2 weeks which means its double the stress and effort. But after doing the new research we were very happy that during our re-defense we finally got accepted and we were even nominated as one of the best Thesis defense. It felt great because after being rejected once, and doing another hard work is very stressful. It reassures us that we would be moving to the next grade level.
GERONIMO

Thesis Moments
This is the last blog for this year so I will make a supah dupah long blogpost just to share our experiences in our thesis. So, our first study is about making candles out of vegetable shortening. During our title defense, we we're all nervous because it is our first time doing it in front of the panelists. It went well but they recommended that we should change the vegetable shortening into a plant or something that might be effective in making a candle. So after that we changed our study into making candles out of used crayons and lemon grass extract. We enjoyed making it though. Until we reached the day of the final defense. Unfortunately, we got rejected because of the crayons. So we really felt bad but we stood up and tried not to be affected on what happened so we thought of a new one. We talked to Sir Mike a couple of days just for us to have an idea on what to do. And then, our new study is about using aquaponics to grow pechay baguio. When I found out that this will be our study I was like wow, because it was the first time that I heard an "aquaponics" word ever. So, I was really curious about it then I researched it in the Internet. And then our re-defense really went well like wowwww COMEBACK IS REAL. I'm really glad that we made it this far since first quarter up to fourth quarter we were doing this thesis. I'm really thankful for my leader and my group mates. They're the ones who helped me in doing this even though I think my effort wasn't enough. Thanks for considering all my excuses Dani when I missed a lot of ip days huhu I'm sorry.

Creating a Diorama: Kinds of Water Uses

Last Group Performance Task of the S.Y
One of our performance tasks this 4th and final quarter was to create a diorama from a chosen topic by our teacher, Sir Romie. Our topic was about the Different Kinds of Water Uses. This topic for me, was very interesting. I learned about the uses of water in agriculture, industry, domestic, and in-stream. Water really is an essential in our everyday lives. I can't imagine a person surviving without water.  Making the actual diorama was really fun too. Although we were so stressed and tired with all the other performance tasks, we still managed to pull something off that our group is proud of.  Our creativity and patience was really tested in this performance task. We only used recycled materials for our diorama because since it was the last performance task, we didn't want anything to go to waste so we decided to use all of the scraps we had from previous projects and incorporated those into our diorama. We thought of ways we could possibly improve our diorama to make it look presentable. In the end, I was still very proud of our group that we were able to submit on the deadline and that we did such a cool diorama.
PALOMARA

The topic of our diorama in science was about kinds of water use. It is about the four types of uses of water; industrial, agricultural, in-stream, and domestic. In our diorama we had a section for each kind. We used materials like illustration boards, folders, paint, Japanese paper and more. Most of the materials we had used were recycled. Our diorama was quite big so it took a longer time to make than what we had imagined.  Although it took a long time to make, I still enjoyed doing it. The diorama we made ended up looking quite good.
OASAN

I am so glad that this semester is over because all of the stress are now gone and i can relax this summer. But it is also sad for me because this semester was quite fun too although frustrating. I enjoyed the things that we did this whole quarter, and I have learned so much from Mr. Dolor about earth science. The diorama that we did was looking great, all of the hard work and all the efforts for that project was all worth it. The diorama that we did shows the functions and the uses of water and how it runs and where it came from. I'm so thankful that our teacher extended the amount of days before the deadline. We don't have a project if our teacher didn't extend and gave us consideration.
SALCEDO

Work Work Work Work Work Work
The performance task that we did for the last quarter is a diorama about the kinds of water use. I really enjoyed decorating our diorama even though I burnt my own finger by a glue gun a lot of times. Making our diorama improves our skills in decorating and arranging the designs correctly. I also learned new things about our topic. Like what the four kinds of water are. So, it's really fun doing stuff like this with your group mates because we're not only doing it for a grade but we share laughter and that's how we get close to each other. Thanks Sir Romie for giving us this last performance task. We gon miss you when you leave.
SARMIENTO

Creating the diorama was a fun project. Like all the other projects we did in science. Doing things like cutting boards, painting materials, shaping papers into something. Creating art. Designing something can be very entertaining. I used to love creating dioramas since they represent an environment. Creating a realistic looking environment is fantastic because it may look real since its not just flat drawing but uses materials to make it look real.
GERONIMO

The diorama that we were assigned to create was about the kinds of water uses. It may sound simple, but it's actually really hard to make. All of us took our sweet time to make sure it looked its best and we also made sure everyone helped. Creating the diorama was a memory we all spent together. The materials we used were all recycled but the energy and effort we put into it, now that wasn't recycled. Besides that, I actually learned a few things about the kinds of water uses!

Recreating the Earth's Structure

Creation of our Earth Model
For our performance task, we were asked to create a model of the earth's layers. Our creativity was surely tested in this task. We managed to cut through our "earth model" without ruining it. Although, I have to admit, it was quite messy and bits of styrofoam were flying everywhere. But no worries, we made sure to clean up after our own mess. Amidst all this, we were able to paint and label our earth model and learn more about the Earth's structure. We are able to identify the crust, mantle, inner and outer core. Our whole group had fun while creating our replica of the earth. Although we were messing around, I'm glad we finished it and I'm glad the whole group participated in the making of our product. I'm sure there are a lot more in store for us in the 4th and last quarter and all I hope is that we do great and that we continue having fun while we learn more things.

PALOMARA

Hard work pays off!
The performance task that we did was very fun and knowledgeable! When we recreated the Earth along with it's layers, I learned more about the place I live and move around in. The crust, the mantle, the inner and outer core, the Moho distribution, the Lehman distribution, etc. I also learned about convections and other stuff and I had also bonded with my group! The performance task was easily created and it looks amazing, in my opinion. We didn't face any problems, except me almost getting paint splattered in my eyes, and because of that, it was much more easy and fun!

MARIANO

The performance task that we did was quite amusing, I'm just glad that we finished and submitted it on time. This performance task wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for my group mates and especially Mr. Dolor guiding us all through it. Not only it was fun, but it was also enlightening, I learned so much about the differences of oceanic plate and oceanic crust and the other terms that has to do with the topic. I am really looking forward for another group activity like this since the school year is about to end. I just wanna say thank you to Mr. Dolor for helping us out, more power to you sir! God bless.

SALCEDO

Progress of our work
The performance task sounds simple yet it was quite hard to do. We used a styrofoam ball as the representation of earth. First, we drew a line to guide us where to cut our styrofoam. Then I cut the line and removed the shape so that the crater will be used to represent the layers of the earth. It was quite fun removing the sliced part from the styro ball. After doing my part, I then moved on to finding the proper places of the labels provided by Mr. Dolor and I properly labelled our earth replica once it was painted and dried. In this activity, I learned about the layers of the earth and what each layer is made of. Mantle is made of ferro-magnesium silicate rocks. Outer core as molten nickel and iron. While the inner core is made of solid Iron and the deeper into the core that hotter it gets. The very core of the earth has a temperature of about 9000°c

GERONIMO

Our performance task was quite simple. It was a  styrofoam that shows the layers of the earth. We painted it and made it look presentable so it would look like our own planet. My group mates took a lot of effort for this task just to make it more nice than the others'. Basically, this project gave me a lot of knowledge about the layers of the earth. I thought there were just 4 layers but I found out it has a lot more. I'm thankful for our teacher because he taught us about this kind of lesson. It was really fun making this project because it is easy and its not stressful. We also enjoyed the cutting and painting of the styrofoam even though we messed up in our classroom and we played with the small pieces of styro. I'm expecting more projects like this to come even though school is about to end.
*Laughs*
SARMIENTO

We made a small replica of the earth. It shows the different parts of the layers. We labeled the crust, mantle, core and other different parts of the earth. The performance task was fun. It was quite messy but easy to make. The activity was fun and enjoyable. Our product turned out to look pretty good.

The World of Chemistry

The first thing I thought about when I found out we were learning about chemistry is that I was finally going to have experience with handling hazardous chemicals. To put it simply, I was completely wrong. We definitely did not meddle with dangerous chemicals. I'm not actually disappointed because at least we don't get scenarios where things explode in the science lab. On a more serious note, I learned quite a handful about chemistry. We tackled about the properties of matter and the changes that occur to it. Chemistry is basically also about matter. And matter is anything in the world that occupies space.

So I feel like Chemistry is such a broad subject and that it is very extensive when it comes to topics. It can go from talking about cells and DNA replication to talking about proteins and food. All in all, it's a fun topic to learn about although it could be very confusing.

PALOMARA

Chemistry is a subject I am currently learning. Everything about it intrigues me, from the terms and the meanings to the laws and the formulas. I've learned quite a lot about chemistry and this includes the lipids, the simple sugars, the saccharides and disaccharides, and many more! The thing I really like about chemistry is the saccharides and disaccharides. The fact that you add this two together to create something new is very beautiful and I want to keep learning.

Sucrose, lactose, fructose, galactose, etc. are the terms i really adore because a.) they rhyme, b.) these are the most confusing terms I want to learn about. Chemistry is a subject I want to learn about and I know I can learn it during Science time.

MARIANO

Chemistry is our current topic in science. It is a branch of physical science. It discusses about chemical reactions between substances and matter. The current lessons that we have discussed were about lipids, simple sugars, amino acids and proteins. I also learned more about the scientists who contributed a lot in chemistry.

We also made poems and songs about chemistry. There are a lot of facts and terms that my brain should learn about. I mostly thought that you should carefully understand every lesson so you wouldn't have a hard time in class. It might not be the easiest but I shouldn't stop learning about it. Chemistry is interesting to learn about if you just listen carefully to the one who is teaching you.

OASAN

This quarter, our topic is about chemistry. It has different meanings like it is the way a substance changes and reacts with other substances, it is also a strong reaction between people. It also has different terms and properties of a substance. The topic that I've never forgotten is matter. It is a material substance that occupies space, has mass, and is composed predominantly of atoms consisting of protons, neutrons, and electrons that are interconvertible with energy.

It also has three states; solid, liquid, and gas. They're things that won't last. Matter really matters because it is used and observed in our daily lives. So, I really want to learn more about chemistry because we all know that it is really complicated because of its terms that all have the same sound.
SARMIENTO

What I learned about chemistry is that it is a branch of physical science that studies the composition, structure, properties, and change of matter. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear chemistry are substances, and the 3 forms of matter which are solid, liquid, and gas. I've learned a lot from the discussions like the saccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and other terms. I've learned that chemistry is also applied on how our body works. Such as how the sugar in the body works.

I also learned that chemistry comes from alchemy, which is referred to as an earlier set of practices that encompassed elements of chemistry, metallurgy, philosophy, astrology, astronomy, mysticism, and medicine. It is often seen as linked to the quest to turn lead or another common starting material into gold.

GERONIMO

I learned so much about saccharides, monosaccharides, lactose, sucrose and many more. This third quarter is one heck of a quarter and a fast one. But it was fun studying chemistry, I will surely miss this quarter because it was the most fun so far this school year in my opinion at least, and I am looking forward to know and learn more about these chemistry related things in the near future and it would be a delight if Mr. Dolor is still our science teacher next year.

Poems About Chemistry

There are so many things one could say about Chemistry. What we learned, how we feel about it, how we relate it in our everyday lives and so much more. What better way is there than to express yourself through poetry? Here we have poems that talk about Chemistry that we made ourselves. Enjoy!

TAKING ON THE WORLD WITH CHEMISTRY
by: Danielle Palomara

Chemistry deals with matter
And this can make our life better.
No, don't let your brain shatter
Just catch all the information before they scatter.

We all know matter is anything that occupies space
And if you didn't, then oh, what a disgrace.
You can't learn everything in just one place
But don't you worry for life isn't a race.

Now remember all the things you learn
Don't let it all go to waste and burn
Now, if you want your life to take a good turn
One must stay focused and stern.

CHEMISTRY AND I
by: Maxene Mariano

You stayed in my memories
Never giving me false stories
You burned in my mind,
But it was one of a kind.

I could never forget,
For you came like a comet.
You came, crashing into me,
But i stood as still as a tree

I took it all in,
For everything you say is true
Even though I started turning blue
I still held onto you.

Your theories are a pain
And chaos is in my brain
For you give me knowledge,
But you are truly good,
Which is another form of food.

CHEMISTRY
by: Tricia Sarmiento

There's a lot of changes
Physical change
Atom change
Chemical change

There are three states of matter
Which do you think is better?
Are things that won't last;
Solid, Liquid, and Gas.

Matter really matters
But some things just don't matter
It is used in our daily lives
Which is also important to other people's lives.

WHAT I FEEL ABOUT CHEMISTRY
by: Anika Oasan

Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemistry
A branch of Science I have hated
I should really learn and study
So I won't have grades that are grated

Matter, Elements, and Reactions
These are the things my brain should swallow
It might turn my brain into fractions,
But it will not turn into hollow.

I might understand formulas now
If i would study all the equations
Now in class I wouldn't have to bow,
I now know all the preparations.

THE KEY
by: Sean Salcedo

I got chemistry
Got a lot of chemistry
Got a lot of people
Trying to crash me from this energy

We solve for V
Because chemistry is the key
Chemistry is everywhere
How can we not see

Chemistry has so many laws
They ain't got a single flaw
If you don't agree, I'll break your jaw
That'll leave the crowd in awe.

WHAT IS CHEMISTRY
by: Axel Geronimo

What is Chemistry?
It has been our lesson lately
We need it to make our relationship more lovely
Although it is related to biology

Biology? I dislike biology!
But wait a minute, our topic is chemistry
I should start mixing substances carefully
And do the whole process joyfully

You don't have to worry
Chemistry won't treat you harshly
As long as you study and study
And let the substances mix into you gracefully.

Creating Our Infographics

The infographic I made showcased the topic of protein denaturation. I provided pictures and facts for further understanding of protein denaturation. I also provided examples of protein denaturation that could be observed in our everyday life. I found it fun to do this performance task because I enjoyed looking for fun ways to showcase the topic given to me. Although I had a bit of trouble with having it printed and laminated, I'm happy I got it done and submitted on time.
PALOMARA

The infographic that I made is about the factors affecting the rate of reaction, I must say that making an infographic was really fun and interesting, but I had a difficult time at first because I didn't know where and how to start and when I laminated it, it cost me forty pesos but it was alright because I already finished it and submitted it to our teacher Mr. Dolor. All in all, I'm happy I finished my work and got to pass something instead of nothing at all.
SALCEDO

The topic of my infographic was about phospholipids. Phospolipids is a very important type of lipid. It provides structure and protection to cells. Finding information about phospholipids wasn't very hard. I found a lot of information about it in my book and on the internet. Making the infographic wasn't hard, it was actually pretty fun for me. All I needed was the correct information and a good design for it.
OASAN

Making an infographic was quite hard for me. First i had to think for a poem about chemistry. With my little knowledge about the topic, it made it more difficult for me so it took me longer than expected to finish my poem. Then after few hours, I had to search for information about a certain topic in chemistry. Which was about collision theory. It wasn't so hard because i used the internet to look for information about it. Afterwards, I did a few editing to make my infographic look appealing, and then I printed it then laminated it. Making infographics was quite fun since after doing it with such hard work looking at it makes you feel like you achieved something good.
GERONIMO

Products of our Hard Work!
The topic of my infographic is reactions of equilibrium (reversible reaction). At first, I was really having a hard time on how to start making my infographics but thank God google helped me with examples and then finally, i got an idea on how to arrange or design my infographics. Its just simple but, at least there's a lot of information and all. It was really nice and a little bit hard but I also learned something from it. After that, I printed it out and laminated it and its not that expensive. On the downside, I submitted it to Sir Dolor when the classes resumed from Christmas break because I forgot to pass it last year because of the midterms and other projects.
SARMIENTO

The infographics that Sir Dolor assigned to me was actually a bit easy to make and it's all about the protein structures. The primary protein structure, the secondary protein structure, the tertiary protein structure, etc. I know for a fact that the infographics I made is easy to understand. During my time creating the infographics, I learned quite a lot. I also had fun while making it! All in all, the infographics was a knowledgeable and fun performance task.

CHEERS TO A NEW YEAR!

2016 has been a good year for us. We've created new memories and learned a lot of new things. We've also experienced a lot of challenges that we thought we would fail to surpass but thankfully, with the help of God, we have faced these problems without fear and with full bravery. Of course, we would also like to thank our teachers for sticking with us throughout the year, and for teaching us how to value our education. For 2017, we hope for a great and memorable year. A year of changing for the better and for achieving our goals or dreams in life and of course, we hope to learn and expand our knowledge more with help not only from our teachers, but from all the other people around us as well. All of these things are possible if we put our mind and heart into it. Remember, if one day seems too much, just take an hour at a time and if an hour is too much, just take a minute at a time and eventually, you'll accomplish all the things you're hoping for. Here's to a year of spreading love and happiness! God bless us all!
